Kingdom

by Sophia Potter

We are free from the anguish of false lives

half-lived, in the half-light

we are a ghosts in the machine

bright, slight, light

and gentler than the breeze

sylphs that dance on All Hallow's Eve

You give me a blanket of blue silk

and a statue carved of alabaster

I hold them in my hands

because I can

because I have these hands

in Egypt we were such fools

serving the gods in sandy caves

in Nineveh I sparkled for you alone

ruby red

a jewel

and here we are again! again!

though otherwise we like to pretend

the earthly realm beckons

try again, again

come to love,

again and again!

when all is said and done

I hope we remember how to have fun

One day we will turn into kingfishers

like Alcyone and Ceyx

one day we will turn into stardust

like our parents

one day we will be empty of our desires

like Siddhartha

Will they forgive us? I ask

Yes, you reply there is only love

in the kingdom of heaven

up above the world

so sweet

fly past the nearest star's

dying heat
